Since 2009/10, Lami has been working as a sound artist and musician, focusing on the intersection of soundscapes and sound ecology. His work is deeply rooted in an exploration of magnetism, approached with unrestrained curiosity, leading to surprising insights into this phenomenon. In an era characterized by hyperspecialization, Lami stands out as a true polymath. His qualifications span photography, visual arts, and a PhD in food technology, alongside extensive professional experience, including a role as a UNESCO employee in Ethiopia. This diverse background has shaped his analytical perspective, which he has directed toward the possibilities and potentials of sound.
His performances involve the real-time manipulation of sounds embedded within the metal oxide layers of magnetic tape. Through repeated explorations, he uncovers and reinterprets these hidden sonic textures, creating dynamic and immersive experiences. His research investigates resonant surfaces, the processes of material degradation, and the technical limits and interferences of devices used for recording and playback.
Working on contained and ruled errors is always crucial for him, reaching something elegant without the constriction of a strict grid of rules, but working on the sound material on the fly, having unexpected achievements in balance with the sound narration.
In 2016, together with Enrico Malatesta and Glauco Salvo, Lami founded MU, an independent association
dedicated to advancing sound experiences. MU serves as a platform for workshops, listening
sessions, performances, and conferences, fostering fresh and innovative approaches to sound and its
broader cultural implications.
In 2022 he joined MAGMA, where he developed in team the Elementi series and other events
in his region.
In 2023, together with Carolina Martines, he founded Manticora Editions.
